FIFO · NoWaste alternative

A NoWaste alternative that shows you the dollars

FIFO: Pantry & Recipes — for iPhone, made in Canada

NoWaste made expiry tracking mainstream. If it isn’t working for you anymore — slow item entry, worries about your data, or a list that nags without helping — here is an honest look at what FIFO does differently, and what NoWaste still does that we don’t.

The short version: you already bought the food. FIFO turns it into dinner — and shows you the dollars saved, to the cent. Scan a grocery receipt, your pantry fills itself with prices attached; the app tells you what to use first and what to cook with it; every item you use or lose moves a real Saved / Wasted ledger computed from what you paid.

What FIFO does differently

The dollar number, not the guilt

Every pantry app says “stop wasting food.” FIFO is built around a different question: what is the waste costing you? Because your items come in with real receipt prices, using something before it turns counts as money saved, and tossing it counts as money wasted — priced from your own receipts (anything estimated is marked, and you can correct it). The number is small at first. Watching it grow is the habit.

A receipt scan instead of typing

The number-one complaint in this category — NoWaste included — is that entering items is a chore you abandon by week two. FIFO’s answer: photograph the receipt. Items, quantities, and prices land in your pantry in one pass, with expiry estimates you can adjust in a tap.

From “expiring” to “dinner”

A reminder that your spinach dies tomorrow is nagging. FIFO closes the loop: recipes are ranked by what’s expiring, and the AI can build a dish from exactly the items on the clock. Cooked meals are then tracked as servings, so leftovers get eaten too.

Where NoWaste still wins

Honesty first: NoWaste has an Android app; FIFO doesn’t (yet). If your household is split across platforms, that may settle it. NoWaste also has a decade of history and a mature barcode workflow. If manual list-keeping already works for you and you don’t care about the money side, staying put is a fine choice.

Switching takes one receipt

There is nothing to migrate and no import to fight with. Install FIFO, then scan your next grocery receipt — that’s your pantry started, prices attached. Add what’s already in the fridge with the barcode scanner or by hand as you use it. Most people are fully moved in within a week of normal shopping.
